Notre Dame has appointed former standout player Pat Garrity as the General Manager for both its men’s and women’s basketball teams. Garrity, a Notre Dame alumnus who played for the university from 1994 to 1998, brings a wealth of experience to the role. During his college career, he averaged 18.8 points and seven rebounds per game, earning the Big East Player of the Year title in 1997.
After his successful college career, Garrity was drafted 19th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1998 NBA Draft. Although he never played for the Bucks, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and subsequently to the Phoenix Suns, where he spent his rookie season. He was then traded to the Orlando Magic, where he played for the remainder of his 10-year NBA career, averaging 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Post-retirement, Garrity transitioned into an executive role, serving as the assistant general manager for the Detroit Pistons before leaving in 2020. In his new role at Notre Dame, Garrity expressed his excitement, calling the university his “second home.”
Garrity’s appointment comes at a time when the women’s team is poised for continued success, having finished last season with a 28-6 record and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament. The men’s team, however, faces challenges after a 15-18 season, placing ninth in the ACC. Garrity’s task will be to build on the women’s success and revitalize the men’s program.
