Knicks Eye Kevin Durant Trade After Thibodeau Firing, Suns May Facilitate Deal

The New York Knicks are reportedly pursuing a trade for Kevin Durant, following the firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks had mutual interest in Durant at the trade deadline but no deal was made. The Phoenix Suns, needing to shed Durant’s $54.7 million salary, may facilitate a trade. An easy match could involve Karl-Anthony Towns, who is set to make $53.1 million next season. Durant, turning 37 in September, likely seeks a championship contender, aligning with the Knicks’ goals after a 51-win season and Eastern Conference finals appearance. The Knicks may also target Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose $54.1 million salary matches Durant’s, though both trades would require significant roster adjustments. Charania notes the Knicks need more depth, which could be challenging if they trade for Durant, as they previously moved five first-round draft picks to acquire Mikal Bridges.
